Bhupen Hazarika Setu in the North-East state of Assam is the longest river bridge in India. The length of this bridge built on the Lohia River of Assam is about 9.15 km. This bridge serves to connect the state of Assam and Arunachal Pradesh with each other. The construction of this longest river bridge in India started in the year 2003 and in 2017 it was opened to the general public.

This bridge connecting Assam and Meghalaya is strategically very important. It will connect both states with the rest of the country. With the construction of the bridge, the distance between Dhubri and Phulbari will be reduced by 203 km.

At present, for these states, one has to use the Naranarayan bridge which is 60 km upstream, or one has to cross the river in small boats which takes a lot of time. Traveling in the river becomes very dangerous during the rainy season.
